Director of the Department of Linguistics at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, leading the documentation project of the Bena Bena language and culture.

His main interests are in the area of language universals and typology. He has undertaken the cross-linguistic examination of tense-aspect systems, causative constructions, relative clauses,

He has done fieldwork on Haruai, a Papuan language of the Highlands of New Guinea.
