Ėvens are settled predominantly in regions with alpine tundra. They used to be fully nomadic, but were settled in villages in the 1930s to 1960s. Nowadays, only the reindeer herding brigades still lead a nomadic life. While the Bystraja district in Kamchatka is relatively easily accessible, with a daily bus connection from the regional capital Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskij, the villages of Sebjan-Küöl and Topolinoe are quite remote. Sebjan-Küöl, for example, is best reached over land from late December until mid-April, when trucks can travel over the frozen rivers.
