Special emphasis was given to the ethnographic context of language practices. To this aim a comprehensive documentation of numerous culturally salient genres was undertaken, such as myths, folk tales, ceremonial dialogues, invocations of ancestors, and shamanic sessions. Among the Kiranti, most rituals are accompanied by a special speech register which is distinct from ordinary speech. The translation of ritual texts is therefore a particular challenge and requires sound background knowledge of indigenous notions of personhood, the ancestral past, and ritual communication patterns.
